Top TV Choices: 7 Essential Films This Week

Highlighted Choice

This Satirical Thriller

Coralie Fargeat's unflinching critique tackles the oppressive nature of feminine aesthetics as well as the perceived horrors of advancing years. The veteran actress delivers a brilliant acting turn in the role of Elisabeth, a mature actress forced into presenting a workout series on TV. Forced aside due to her deceitful superior Harvey, she undergoes an enigmatic and horrifying procedure called the Substance. This creates a youthful duplicate portrayed by Margaret Qualley, leading to a progressively parasitic dynamic between them. Friday 17 October, the streaming service Paramount+

The Woman in Cabin 10 Film

This Agatha Christie-esque mystery features Knightley in the role of Laura, a top-notch writer who opts for a break from writing about global conflict to embark on an opulent ship accompanied by an ailing wealthy inheritor and donor, her spouse, and other affluent passengers. But after a mysterious woman goes overboard during the evening and the entire crew claims she was never there, the reporter's sleuthing skills awaken. Available now, on Netflix

Presence Film

Soderbergh tests his directorial skills through this nifty ghostly tale captured wholly from the perspective of the phantom. After a clan featuring mother Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe settles into their new suburban house, the camera – representing the ghost – follows them around. The daughter appears conscious of the ghostly being, and it seems protective of her. But why? The premise is enjoyable that avoids overstaying, with a twist that could catch you off guard. Saturday 11 October, multiple showings, Sky Cinema

Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy

Cage embraces his eccentric image via this autobiographical spoof. He portrays a self-obsessed film star named Nicolas Cage who accepts a $1m payday to appear at a celebration on the Spanish island for the wealthy Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Contacted by the intelligence agency to spy on the potential kingpin, Cage's “nouveau shamanic acting ability” comes in handy. This Saturday, 9pm, the Channel 4 network

This Creepy Thriller

Scott Derrickson's contained scarefest holds up well even without a continuation. Located in 1970s Colorado, multiple kidnappings has made the local kids anxious. After Finney is kidnapped by the villain and imprisoned in a cellar, he anticipates a fatal end. However, the non-functional line on the wall keeps ringing, with ghostly voices offering help, while the prescient dreams from his sibling Gwen may be his salvation. A solid creepfest. This Saturday, 10.50pm, on Film4

The Tammy Faye Biopic

In the battle between God and Mammon, it's a knockout win for greed in this director's wonderfully garish film adaptation of the disgraced TV preacher plus her lawbreaking partner. Andrew Garfield acts as the corrupt Bakker, who declares initially, claiming divine approval for wealth. The couple begin monetising the nation's spiritual convictions. It's a riot of tacky decor, bad makeup and bad faith, though Jessica Chastain manages to show the real-life figure as a sympathetic figure. Tuesday 14 October, early morning, the Film4 channel

Black Bag

This period's additional entry from Steven Soderbergh presents a espionage tale as tight like the turtlenecks worn by Michael Fassbender's British agent. He is tasked to identify a mole within their ranks from five suspects – one of whom is his spouse. Each performer are experts of deadpan cool, leading to a delightful mental battle of deception or honesty develops. Additional actors take part the clever spy entertainment. October 17th, various showings, Sky Cinema
